The first Dexter's Laboratory comic book story appeared in Cartoon Network Presents # 1. Curiously, Dexter did not appear again in any of the 24 issues of CNP, although Monkey (of Dial "M" for Monkey) did make a few appearances. When CNP was cancelled and replaced by Cartoon Network Starring, a companion Dexter's Laboratory series debuted as well. Dexter creator Genndy Tartakovsky wrote and drew the issues # 1 and # 25, and provided the covers for the first 13 issues. Issue # 5 — "Momdark" — was adapted as an episode of the show. Dexter's Laboratory switched to bi-monthly publication after issue # 24.
